Hoover Dam looks so grand and majestic, such a large concrete
structure! It was so amazing to visit it and see in person, so different from
what you see in the movies! When we visited it was a nice, bright and lovely sunny day. It is a must visit man-made structure, would grab you up and you'll be staring and admiring its beauty for hours. The deep blue water is so still, the lovely contrast of blue water and brown/black/red desert landscape is enchanting!
A few facts:
- Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is an arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the US states of Arizona and Nevada.
- It 726 feet high and 1,244 feet long.
- Nearly a million people visit the Dam each year.
- Hoover Dam was one of the largest man-made structures in the world at the time of its construction and one of the world’s largest producers of hydroelectric power until 1948
- Building Hoover Dam required more than 5 million barrels of concrete.
- As many as 20,000 vehicles a day drive across the 45 ft. wide top of the dam between Nevada and Arizona.
- Hoover Dam is named for Herbert Hoover, the nation’s 31st president.
- Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by volume.
- The Colorado River is more than 1,400 miles long and supplies water to Los Angeles, San Diego, and Phoenix.
