Globetrotting Diaries - Singapore Series - 1: Downtown

Wow, It has been 1.5 Years since we moved to Singapore! Time flies by so soon!
We are loving this beautiful country, one of the safest, greenest and cleanest cities in the World!
Moving to modern fast moving downtown from a suburban Dallas City was first a shock for me! But as we  got to know this place we totally fell in love with it.

Some facts and a little history:

  • Singapore is officially the Republic of Singapore, is a sovereign city-state and island country in Southeast Asia. It lies off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and is 137 kilometres north of the Equator.
  • Modern Singapore was founded in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles as a trading post of the East India Company with permission from the Johor Sultanate.
  • Singapore is a rapidly growing city-state of nearly 5.4 million people. It is one of the smallest countries in the world. Also it has about 45 percent Expat population!
  • There are four official languages in Singapore: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil which reflects the mixed ethnic make-up of the city.
  • Many Singaporeans have a habit of adding “la” to the end of their sentences. For example, “okay-la,” an example of “Singlish”.
  • Singapore is an extremely green city with gardens, trees and jungles everywhere. It is “city in a garden” in a true sense and is also very clean due to its littering laws.
